Be Careful Of Putting All Your Eggs In LinkedIn

Are you living off LinkedIn?

I was and as a recruiter, no one finds it strange or would ever question me on my decision to put almost (99%) of my eggs in one basket.

That basket is LinkedIn.

For recruiters globally, LinkedIn is the life stream.

It allows me unlimited access to hiring companies and candidates.

Almost every candidate I acquired in the past was from LinkedIn.

It is almost like “If you are not on LinkedIn, you don’t exist.”

If this is also your profile, then I want to caution you.

No platform is infallible. We have seen it in our life time many platforms that come and go.

What if the same happens to LinkedIn?

Do you have a backup plan or will your recruitment business fold?

If you had never thought about this, now is a good time because those who pay attention to this have a higher chance of business longevity.

The rest is taking a strong bet that LinkedIn won’t fold. I’m in this camp too but I prefer to have an alternative especially if that alternative further aids in my business and personal branding.

I went old school. I built a website to teach about recruitment and career strategizing.

And I channel people there. I ask them to subscribe to my website by offering them quality content.

Some did and this is the first tier filter of those who are keen in what I share. This list grows.

Over time, I remove the worry that my business is solely reliant on one platform.

No doubt a website can never contain a network of candidates the way LinkedIn does, it opens up business opportunities in coaching, in securing recruitment projects and over time, it can lead you to unexpected green fields and additional income streams that might even replace what you achieve in recruitment.

It is always great to have a backup you can call your own. Websites are as old as the internet, they survive and most importantly, they belong to you until you shut it down.

p.s. DM me if you want to put together a business website that works according to your preferred style.
