Shy About Asking About Salary Details
Salary is one of the key reasons why people change jobs.
If you beat about the bush, you lose the opportunity to build trust.
Yet many recruiters struggle to get those words out “Can we talk about salary expectation?”
If you are facing this problem, preparing a script is the way to go.
Why a script? Doesn’t it sound stiff and rehearsed?
The answer is yes, but it beats moving ahead in the dark.
Some candidates may throw you off by suggesting that they want to focus on the job scope and fit first before engaging in salary discussion.
To that, the response would be:
Would you prefer to move into a discussion with the said company knowing that they have the right budget for your expectation?
I have never come across a candidate who enjoys a “blind date” with their future employer.
A “blind date” is like going into the interview, not knowing whether they can accommodate your expectation.
With a bit of logic, it’s not hard to convince your potential candidates why it’s in their interest to have an open discussion about their salary expectation.
9 out of 10, they will agree.
Your sincerity and professionalism (way you convey this) will alleviate any concern they had.
No one wants to be shortchanged going into an interview and candidates held back because they fear being offered a less than competitive package.
Your value as a recruiter is to help the candidate achieve at least the market benchmark or better. This is also helping your client who can hire with peace of mind knowing the candidate won’t abandon ship so easily since they know they have been given a fair or attractive package.
Asking for salary details demonstrates respect for your candidates. Don’t avoid it; ask it to your advantage.
