Be a Transformational Recruiter

I did a lot of recruitment in the last decade.

Among the candidates and clients, I recall those that left me with warm fuzzy feelings.

It is like I have done something special, beyond the call of duty which is to connect a candidate to a company.

I ponder over this from time to time, and recently while listening to a podcast by John C Maxwell, I was inspired by what John said about transformational leadership.

That was my light bulb moment because I knew those special placements came across as ultra special because I have unknowingly crossed into a different realm.

I wasn’t just helping a company connect a great talent.

I was transforming lives.

The interesting thing is that the act of transforming lives does not have a fixed definition.

It’s not fixated to a certain salary increment, a major title upgrade or a change of location (expat posting).

It can be all of the above but what transformational means for one person is uniquely different from another.

As you do your recruitment work, I like to encourage you to also consider the transformational impact you have for your candidates and clients.

Without this transformational mindset, there is a high chance you will relegate to a normal calling - that of making placements and sales.

There is nothing wrong in achieving incredible sales, but it is often not the motivator for the greatness in you.

Companies thrive and dive depending on the people they have hired.

When you recruit, you are not just plugging a gap in their staffing needs, you are also indirectly transforming the organization to be robust against market volatility and securing the jobs of many more in that process.

That is why when I reflect on all the work done, the difference lies not in the billing amounts but on the dedication towards ensuring both candidate and client are enriched by their new-found connection.

Doing so will set you apart as a transformational recruiter which I believe is a powerful brand you won’t mind.
