Side Hustle As A Recruiter
A client asked me, “Can I do recruitment as a side hustle?”
I was bemused.
“Yes, of course” I replied without a pause. I had been asked this question quite often.
Recruitment is a service and if you are thinking hard about what you can do for a side hustle, the answer is services.
Of course, you can offer products and content but I see them more suited for long term plays. Income doesn’t come in quick or at all depending on your quality.
Products and content creation don’t bring in income from day 1 but services can! The latter is popularly categorized as the non J curve side hustle.
In my last post, I shared how you can make $12000 in 30 days as a recruiter.
If you read it, you realize it is not rocket science.
The only gnawing issue is confidence.
You’re not sure you can do it. I assure you can because recruitment does not require technical know-how.
That said, I’m not saying it is a piece of cake.
People skills. Listening skills. Organizational skills.
These skills are highly crucial for a recruiter, but they can be learnt! Unlike calculus, trigonometry haha… nah, I did well for these but they NEVER once came into my life except for those 2 years.
Providing a service puts you in position to make money from the get-go.
If you are a designer, you get paid when someone hires you to design a logo or a YouTube thumbnail.
The logic is the same for all service offerings and recruitment has a high profit margin if you do it right. (Check out all my resources in this newsletter to learn them)
On average, it takes me 6-8 hours to complete a deal that averages $20,000.
If you do the math, that’s $2500 per hour for each of my 8 hours.
Disclaimer: My agency is not actively hiring but I would still say this.
If you are thinking to side hustle as a recruiter and earn a few tens of thousands per year as extra income, it is highly possible.
You just need to leverage your network, or even start from cold DMs to get your first clients. From there, do the necessary steps for recruitment and you will start seeing results.
“Is it really that simple?”
The answer is yes but the execution is not easy. It comes with practice.
I was still clumsy in my 7th year but the 8th year onwards, something hit my head and I have an eureka moment. I managed to piece together everything and from then on, I started experiencing much more successes than setbacks.
If you are an experienced career person, jumping into recruitment may come off easier since you have mileage in handling people, complexities and everything else in between.
But even as a rookie, your dedication to details and willingness to hustle can still win you the deal.
That’s why I never focus on a recruiter’s prior experience or its lack of.
Rather, if you are willing to learn the steps and build the mindset to manage your clients and candidates, you will do great.
