Have You Thought About Your Future?

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

This saying is so cliche, yet strikingly true if you’re a recruiter today.

Let me ask you a question.

Have you thought about your future?

To remain as a recruiter or what?

If your answer is the former, or if you have no idea, you may be in a very rude shock in the near or distant future.

Either way, you won’t like it.

In 2015, I was made redundant because my ex-employer was acquired by another bigger agency.

In 2017, I made myself redundant because there was a major restructuring and I didn’t feel comfortable to stay on.

⚡In 2020, I decided to part ways with my employer and venture out completely on my own.

And that was the best decision I did though it was a very difficult transition.

It took me 2 years from 2020 to 2021 before I started to gather momentum and 5x my income.

The breakthrough came because I figured out what to do.

I could have figured it out earlier if I had begun with the end in mind.

I joined the recruitment industry in mid 2009. If and only if I had envisioned for myself a path for my recruitment career, I would have treated every single day very differently.

I would have paid more attention to mastering the skills to be a top-of-mind recruiter.

Instead, I was happy doing what I did because I was hitting the company’s set targets and getting the accolades from the organization.

The problem is…this is good for the company, but never good enough for the individual recruiter.

When the market gets choppy, all the achievements of the past didn’t matter.

What matters only is the skills and network you have built for yourself.

Do you have the skills to go solo?

Will your network follow you, or at least most of it?

Can you replicate or even do better as a solo recruiter?

Or if corporate is your cup of tea, are you taking steps to become a partner of the company?

I bet most recruiters reading this don’t think about becoming a partner of their firms nor coming out on their own.

The fallacy of “current stability” confuses most of us.

It tells us that everything is ok and we’re doing good or even great.

What it does not tell us is that all this can come crashing down in a split second.

When the pandemic struck, many recruiters lose their jobs because hiring froze and agencies decide to right size their staff strength.

Yet, I was having my best years during the pandemic.

There was no special condition I was privileged to. I was just nimble enough to pivot because I trained myself to.

This is what I want for you to envision today.

Don’t be comfortable just being a great recruiter; be more. Be your own boss or be a partner.

Learn with a sense of urgency the skills that make you stand out and invest in building relationships with sponsors who will champion your growth and success.

p.s. If you are inspired to be your own boss and launch your agency, I can coach you so that you would never have to fear career instability. DM for details.
