No Matter How HARD You Search, There Is Only One Candidate
For the past 3 months, I tried to find a candidate in Japan.
I went into this project firing all cylinders because I knew it would be hard.
I was proven right, but this wasn’t something to brag about.
When it comes to certain countries, Japan and Korea are in my humble opinion, the toughest regions to get the right candidates.
You would be lucky to get anyone even willing to talk.
Language barrier is one, there is also the cultural aspect. Japanese stay long term with their employers and while the global economic impact might have softened this stance, most are steadfast loyal to their companies.
Know Your Terrain To Strategize Your Search, Or You May Be Wasting Your Time
Taking Japan as an example, it does not bore well if you narrow your search to the ideal specifications per the job description.
In fact, you want to cast the net wide and then see if you can even get anyone willing to talk.
From there, I hope you don’t discard the candidate because they are not a clear fit.
It is your job to help the candidate and client find common ground.
You would be doing yourself and your clients a serious disservice if you don’t highlight the candidate landscape properly as a backdrop to your work.
Often times, I hear recruiters burning midnight oil trying to find that impossible rockstar. Some even invest money to outsourced agencies to build a long list of potential candidates.
Most of the candidates in those long list are irrelevant.
You get yourself exhausted and your wallet is a bit thinner.
Instead, do this:
In every country, find the most probable cities where candidates are likely to be found.
Narrow to cities that are within 1 hour traveling to your designated city and then hunt for candidates in those nearby cities.
This is the fastest way to get results for hard-to-fill roles that no one can fulfill.
For all this work, I charge a higher premium but my clients are happier instead of waiting for a random agency to give them hope.
I believe it is a win-win.
