Failure Duration

Over time, I come to reduce my failure duration.

Failure duration is the length of time it takes for you to experience “failure” to converting it into a success. In recruitment, that would be to move from the current failed interview into a successful job offer.

In my younger days, I had less immunity to such setbacks.

A single setback can wipe out whatever good work I’m doing for other projects, creating a cascading chain of bad luck.

Thankfully over time, I trained myself to bounce back quickly from failures which are part and parcel of recruitment, no matter how well prepared I or the candidate may be.

I call it the 5 minute rule. It simply means I don’t wallow in disappointment beyond 5 minutes of receiving the dreaded news and in that 5 minutes, I reflect on the feedback given for the failed interview.

That 5 minutes is a game changer.

By reflecting calmly on the feedback, I have on multiple accounts and occasions achieved the following:

  1. Prepare the next candidate to avoid the pitfalls (leads to a successful close)

  2. Reiterate the strengths of the original interviewee and resolve potential misunderstandings with the hiring manager. To my surprise (yes, even till today!), hiring managers do reverse their decision and ask for a second interview. When they do, the chance of placing the candidate is extremely high.

Let’s say if I was engulfed in disappointment after the news, the above two scenarios would not materialize because I was focused on the past. Never live in the past nor fantasize about the future. Be in the moment.
