I Want To See More CVs
L was deflated when he called me.
This is crazy. I already profiled 4 potential candidates. The client interviewed all four. They are interested in one candidate but wanted more CVs to confirm they are hiring the right candidate.
This is a typical situation faced by many recruiters and you can see the blood draining from their faces.
If you are getting this type of request regularly, this may not be a case of random (bad) luck.
Here’s a proven checklist:
Don’t spoil your client by giving them many CVs each time. Once they are used to it, they can’t reverse. You should also consider carefully if this is a value add, or an additional burden to your client. Remember the pareto principle — less is more.
You are not providing your insights to the client, but simply pushing CVs to them. Guess what?, They may be hiring but that does not mean they know the candidate landscape like you do. If there is no purple unicorn in sight, be confident to tell them so and get everyone down to earth.
Invest time in your best candidate. Build a compelling summary to help your client understand why he/she is the best for the role. The summary can be in the form of a one-page document detailing fully the candidate’s strengths and relevance for the role. This means extracting the key highlights that may not be obvious on their resume. If you know only the details on the resume, you are not value-adding.
By combining these 3 steps, your clients will trust you further and your insights will help them make that informed decision quickly instead of asking for more CVs.
Asking for more CVs is actually your clients saying, “I am not sure if they (the candidates) can do the job.”
It’s your job to help your clients see why the candidate is the best person who can do it, and that it is actually counter productive and costly to keep searching beyond that.
Note the words in bold. Your candidate is not just a potential candidate who can do it, he/she is the BEST PERSON to do it. This changes your approach, don’t you think?
